I was just talking to Grammie on the phone, and she reminded me that since I haven't posted on any blogs lately, she has no idea what Tessa looks like these days! So in the interest of showing off my adorable kids, here are some recent photos. Tess, by the way, is a dream infant. In her first year, we've taken her to Salt Lake, California, Kansas City, and Barcelona. Hey, have baby will travel. She must be destined to be a world traveler, because she easily adapts to long airplane flights and changing time zones!

Grammie and Grandad celebrated their 63rd anniversary with all of us! What a special night - spent together in the temple. Lori joked that Grammie sure knows how to throw her own party! It was complete with a delicious 7-layer dip, Texas moist cake, and root beet floats. We love you Grammie Doll and Daddy O. We are all so glad that you made the righteous choice to marry in the temple... 63 years ago!

Pretzel Salad

Pretzel Salad
Ingredients:
Crust:
3 cups chopped pretzels
1 Tbsp Sugar
3/4 Cup Butter (softened, but not melted)

Middle Layer:
12 oz Cream Cheese
1 1/4 Cup Sugar
8 oz Cool Whip

Top Layer:
One 6 oz pkg Jello (I used raspberry, but you can use any flavor)
2 Cups pineapple juice
1 pkg of frozen fruit (I used raspberries)

Directions:
Crust:
Mix pretzels, butter, and sugar together. Put in 9x13 pan and bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. (I also sprinkled sugar on the bottom of the pan before putting the mixture in. It makes it crunchier.)

Middle Layer:
Mix ingredients and spread over crust after crust has cooled. Make sure there aren't any holes.

Top Layer:
Bring juice to a boil then dissolve the jello into the juice. Add fruit to juice/jello misture then pour on top and put in fridge to firm.

I use the freezer in between the layers to speed things up.
Great for Summer BBQ's!

We had such an amazing time in Barcelona for Christmas! We feel so blessed that we were able to go, and particularly blessed that we made it through all those long plane flights with two toddlers. Whew. Thank goodness we had Uncle Spencer there to help!

I could take up pages with all the stories, all the sights we saw, all the beauty of Barcelona. But the best part, of course, was being a part of all that Mom and Dad are doing. We saw the whole transfer process - Mom and Dad spending hours in the mission office praying and looking at the transfer board and putting each missionary in the right place. We met the three new missionaries coming in, and spent time with the three missionaries leaving. We went to a baptism the day after we arrived, and church the day after that. Ellie couldn't get enough of the missionaries; she wanted to spend all her time in the office talking to them. They were so sweet to her.

My favorite moment in Barcelona was finding out that the mission had achieved its goal of 400 baptisms for the year. It was the last Sunday afternoon of the year, and we were heading out to see Parc Guell (designed by Barcelona's famous architect Gaudi). We met the missionaries coming back to the office. The assistants had been on the phone all afternoon making sure all the scheduled baptisms had happened. When they saw us, Elder Lee (an assistant and departing missionary) exclaimed, "We did it! We just confirmed the 400th baptism!" It was an emotional moment. I was so glad we had witnessed it. Later that night, Mom made a Texas moist cake and put candles with the number 400 on it and took it to the office for a celebration. As the elders continued calling district and zone leaders to gather their weekly numbers, they confirmed two more baptisms, bringing the yearly total to 402. An incredible miracle!

Despite being so busy, Mom and Dad actually spent a lot of time with us. After dropping the departing missionaries off at the airport, we all hopped in the big Transporter van and headed to the coast. Mom and Dad love a little place on the Costa Brava called Tossa de Mar. The medieval castle walls still stand, complete with medieval apartments build inside the walls. Ellie was thrilled to walk on an actual castle wall and I, of course, was just soaking in all that medieval history. The weather was sunny with a breeze, and it was so relaxing.

Mom and Dad took us to their favorite Tapas and hot chocolate restaurants, and their favorite neighborhoods and stores. We went to the Columbus statue overlooking the harbor, the Maritime Museum, cathedrals, and (at least for me) the National Museum of Catalon Art (a huge medieval fresco collection - heaven). On our last night, New Year's Eve, Mom cooked up a classic Spanish paella. She's amazing! They have so much energy, it's just incredible. They are just loving being with each other, being missionaries, living in a big European city, and taking care of the Lord's work in Spain. I'm already saving our pennies to get back as soon as we can!

Steve and Jill came to town last weekend, spent a couple of nights in the Hinckley's basement, and joined the family for the weekly Sunday night pilgrimage to the grandparent's home.

Pumas advance to Region I Championship

On the strength of a hat trick by sophomore forward Chloe Hansen, the Pumas erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to claim a 3-2 victory over Pima, in today's Region I semi-finals. Hansen found the net 3 times in the first 18 minutes of the second half to stake PV to a 3-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. A Pima goal in the 85th minute made things very interesting down the stretch but PV held on for the win.

The Pumas now advance to Saturday's Region I Championship match. Their opponent, site and game time are yet to be determined, pending the outcome of the other semi-final taking place Wednesday evening.

Chloe is now ranked 30th in the nation and has set a new school record for most goals/assists!

The Pumas (13-1-1) raced to a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back to post an 8-1 win over visiting South Mountain yesterday at Shoenhair Field. Seven different PV players found the scoring column in the lopsided win. Chloe Hansen, Simone Marshall and Nicole Acosta each scored a pair of goals. Katie Jarvinen and Kayla McClain also found the back of the net. Both Hansen and McClain also added 2 assists each. Marshall, Acosta, Michelle Martin and Katie Smith each had a helper in the game.

Yes, adventures with the highlighter. I was out of my office for no more than three minutes. When I came back, Ellie had climbed up on my desk, found the blue highlighter at the very back of it, and taken it to the floor for some experimentation.

The pool picture is Ellie and Claire Jensen. I finally captured a few photos of these pool buddies. Dani and I have been taking her twins and Ellie to the pool every week all summer, and we just realized that we don't have any pictures of these cute kiddos swimming in Nana's pool! We're always in the pool with them! So on a warm September evening when Mom was in town, and the Jensens were wonderful enough to have us for dinner and swimming, I captured a few photos to represent our favorite part of summer.

And here's how some tired parents spent part of General Conference. As has become tradition, we had Monica and Jon Gibson over for the weekend. Six months ago we both had toddlers. Now we have a toddler and newborn, and the Gibsons have a toddler and one in utero. So, yeah, fatigue is pretty much the standard these days. I snuck a photo of Rob while he was sleeping, and he retaliated by getting a photo of the rest of us later. Good thing we recorded all the sessions!

My little Annie-bananie turned ONE on Sunday! I can't believe how this past year has flown by. She is our joy, cuddler, giggler, and cheerful little sis. The first ever Hansen family reunion was held July 4-5 at the Brighton LDS Girls Camp. The festivities began with a chili dinner in the festively-decorated Lodge on the Fourth, followed by family stories and games.

Friday was spent on the Zip-line and the brass ring grap (see photos), with a delicious chicken dinner prepared by the camp staff.

The Steve Hansen family gets the prize for having come the longest distance - they drove their Hummer all the way from Las Vegas. Owen Bitner Hinckley (son of Joseph and Jenni Hinckley) gets the prize for being the youngest - age 3 weeks!

A good time was had by all. Special thanks to Lisa and Eden for making this happen!

May Milestones

We hit some major milestones last month . . . Jamin graduated! (Well, he participated in the graduation ceremonies in anticipation of completing his dissertation in August). He also accepted a job at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC as a visiting professor. After 8 years in Boston, we are Carolina bound!

Eliza turned 6, lost her two front teeth, and is working on kicking her thumb sucking habit--and doing great!

Ashton decided on what to be when he grows up. The conversation went like this:
A: I wanna be Superman when I grow up, not like a dentist. Mom, can I be Superman when I grow up?
me: Hmm, he's pretend, so I don't think so.
A: (with thoughtful determination) I think I can.

Sami and Chloe flew in from Phoenix, the Nelsons came down from American Falls, and the Closes, Hinckleys and Hansens came up from Salt Lake, all meeting in the Logan Cemetery at Scott's grave within 10 minutes of each other (thanks to Kathy's great organization). Rhett would have joined us but he missed his flight and did not arrive in Salt Lake until 6:00 p.m., but we are glad to have him here now!

Unplanned was the arrival of Karen and Verl O'Brien and their family - we met up with them at Grandad Hansen's grave!

The Sisters' Trip to Utah

We had such a fun time going to Utah at the end of January. The camera came up missing at the end of the trip and so we are a little late in posting these pictures. They are so cute that I had to post them anyway! I wish I knew how to do a little slideshow like you talented Hinckley girls, sorry it is such a long post!

How cute is little Jaz? She is getting so grown up! I remember when she was the little baby! She is wearing her Alphabet Crown that she earned when she learned the whole alphabet and graduated from school. Next time you see her, ask her to sing you the song, its pretty much the cutest thing ever! Saylor May is such a sweet little baby, we had so much fun holding her! I forgot how great tiny babies are! And of course Kim's baby has a diamond studded pacifier! It is so so so cute! Love your babies Kim! We left the Summer's and went to pick Ali up in Provo. It was such a fun car ride with Kathleen driving and Grammie Doll too! We got to see Ali's darling apt and Reagan and Marilyn too! It is always fun to visit with them!For Chester's birthday we took him bowling with some of his friends. We had so much fun! I am not the greatest photographer, and I know that my camera was on the wrong setting, but this was such a cute pic of Chester's celebratory move after a good bowl. I think it turned out pretty cute!

A Big Day for Closes, Hansens, and Hinckleys

Think of a cross between Bonneville Stake Conference and a temple dedication. Music arranged by Bill Evans and played by the strings; the President of the Church, two members of the Twelve and a Seventy; chairs and television monitors in every room; an office for the General Authorities to wait in, complete with snacks and drinks on starched table cloths and flowers.

Bishop and Dolly Close had a big weekend getting everything ready. Kathleen and Clark went over about to the building about 3:30 to help with final arrangements. It was flurry of activity - chairs being set up, video cabling being connected, furniture being re-arranged, and the the chapel beginning to fill.

There was some question about whether or not President Hinckley would actually make it as he was not feeling very well well. But the security men arrived about 4:00 p.m. to do final arrangements and setup. Elder Oaks and Elder Wirthlin arrived about 4:45, and President Hinckley arrived with Richard Hinckley about 4:50. They brought him in the the far east door (where a red carpet runner had been laid from the door to the parking lot) in a wheelchair and rolled him all the way down the hall to the front of the chapel; a security man on each side helped him up the two steps to the stand.

The meeting began with the congregation singing "The Spirit of God" accompanied by Elaine Sharp at the organ (who sat on the front row 69 years ago when Pres. Heber J. Grant dedicated the building) and the Garden Park Strings. Ted Evans, twice bishop of the ward, offered the invocation, after which the choir and strings performed Bill Evans' arrangement of Bless this House (arranged for the occasion). President Clark Hinckley spoke, followed by Elder Wirthlin and then Elder Oaks, all of whom were brief. President Hinckley then gave a beautiful dedicatory prayer . Following the prayer the choir, strings, and Primary children sang a special arrangement (by Bill Evans) of "We Ever Pray For Thee". There were few dry eyes. Bishop Close gave the benediction, and it was all over by 5:35.

Today we attended the funeral of Uncle Leo. It was a wonderful service. Verl gave the invocation; Eric and Debbie spoke; and the concluding speaker was Leo's young bishop, Ben Behunin, who wore a bow-tie that Leo had given him!

Leo was buried in the Salt Lake City cemetery. Daddy Owen dedicated the grave, after which members of the armed forces removed and folded the flag over Leo's coffin in an impressive ceremony. It was a snowy but sunny day.

Hallelujah. for. family. *Jose and I had lunch today at the MOA. It was such a relief to know that amidst the overwhelming (to a new BYUer) scurry of the Ants to the Mother Hole, 11am lunch with someone familiar and wonderful was happening. Truly. Jos and I sat at the MOA cafe (my first time, mind you) and laughed at BYU's own idiosyncracies and filled each other in on the happening of our new homes: Jose working for the Democrats (a little excitement from the fellow family Democrat), Jenni having her first full week back at work since early December, and me and my hermanas roommates. It was a great hour, and I just have to say that we really do have the greatest family.

After the Pocono's Christmas extravaganza . . .Mom, Dad, Joseph, Jenni, and Spencer's flights out of Newark airport got cancelled (this isn't the fun part). The fun part is that they were able to come into New York City and spend an evening at our apartment and walking around our neighborhood! We went to dinner at my favorite Thai restaurant and walked around Wall Street past the NY Stock Exchange. It was super fun for us to have so many family members visiting at one time! We love visitors, especially when it's family. Remember, as long as we're here you have a place to stay in New York City!

We had a wonderful Christmas with the Hinckleys in Mt. Pocono, PA. With Ann, Lizzie, Holly and I in the eastern part of the country, we decided to celebrate in a place that was driving distance for all of us. Thanks to our westerners for making the trek out here! It was so fun to be all together, and especially to have all 8 cousins under one roof. Thanks Mom and Dad for making it happen! Here's some pics of Christmas week.

A Christmas Celebration

The report is that there were one million requests for tickets to this year's Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert with the King's Singers. Some who did not get tickets offered to pay $500 to anyone willing to give up a ticket. This has become the biggest event of the season.

It was a great concert, attended by Grammie and Daddy Owen, Sean, Regan, Sophie, Maddi, Spencer, Joseph & Jenni, and 20,000 others.

About half of the numbers were arranged by Mack Wilberg - including arrangements for the King's Singers with choir, orchestra, and bells! Richard Elliott tap-danced through a rendition of "I Saw Three Ships" on the organ, playing the melody with his feet. The Christmas story from Luke 2 was read by the King's Singers in appropriate British accents.
